Experimental electronic meets a modern-day 80s indie-pop/rock daydream, Adam Mah is no
stranger to creating evocative music.
Adam’s diverse scope as an artist, producer, and composer has shaped him into a thought-
provoking songwriter. His tracks often examine the notion of perspective through captivating
vocals, synthesizers bathed in reverb, and introspective lyrics.
Adam’s upcoming debut album, Year of the Dog (due out June 23, 2023), references his
Chinese Zodiac and the year 2018, which was full of personal changes. The album explores
themes surrounding navigating long-term relationships, nostalgia baiting, and the music
industry’s current state.
Much of the album touches on long-term relationships, which come in many forms; from
celebrating long-term romantic relationships, to coming to terms with dissolving ones. And more
specifically, a breakup between bandmates.
Adam also references society’s mania for movie and television show reboots, faux vintage
aesthetics, and mass-produced Urban Outfitter graphic tees. The song “Recycle Nostalgia”
reveals the patterns of each new generation’s fascination with the decades that preceded them.
When it comes to the state of the music industry, Adam on the opening track “Platforms,”
ponders whether professionals value art based on metrics, or their craft. The album also sheds
light on artists punching down on other artists. It seems the internet rewards hate, rather than
letting people make the art they enjoy. Sincerity is becoming scarce online. In the same realm,
Adam also reflects on the feeling of needing to project a certain persona regarding the type of
art he consumes. The album’s first single, “Video Subscription,” best represents his anxiety.
With appearances from Jordan Lawlor, ROYAL, and RIKII, Year of the Dog is a body of work
ready to engage with subjects easier left unaddressed.
Adam’s last EP, No More Late Nights, released in 2022 and featuring two tracks with Hazel,
foreshadowed what’s to come with his upcoming album. The tracks poked at the obvious cracks
found in the music industry, doom scrolling until our wit’s end, and getting thirty-second social
media bops stuck in our heads.
In 2021, Adam released the Commute EP, an instrumental collaboration with Sleepy Leggs
(now Willo Hill), along with two indie-rock singles, “Manic Pixie Dream Girl“ and “Quiet In The
City,” plus the holiday single, “Green to Everything“ ft. Hazel. His debut EP, The Cloud, was
released in 2020.
Adam has toured supporting The Rubens (2019) and Hotel Mira (2020), as well as performing
at the Westward Music Festival (2019) and the Kansai Music Conference in Osaka (2020).
